Cookie Policy

Last updated: 31 July 2026

This page says exactly which cookies we use, who sets them, how long they last and how you control them. The table below is not copied from anywhere: it is the result of an automated check of this site.

1. What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website stores in your browser. On your next visit the browser sends it back, and the site remembers something about you, for instance that you already dismissed a message.

Cookies are not programs and cannot read other files on your device. Some are set by us, others by the services we use, such as analytics tools or advertising platforms.

Alongside cookies, some services use similar technologies that store data locally in the browser. We treat them the same way.

2. The categories we use

Strictly necessary. These make the site work and remember your cookie choice. They cannot be switched off, because without them the site would not work correctly and we could not demonstrate what you chose. They are not used to track you for advertising.

Analytics. These show us how the site is used: which pages are read, where people give up, what cannot be found. We use them to fix what does not work. If you decline them the site behaves identically, we simply lose that kind of information.

Marketing. These let advertising platforms measure which campaigns work and show you our ads elsewhere. If you decline them you will still see ads on the internet, but they will not be connected to your visit here.

Preferences. These remember choices you make here, such as your accessibility settings or a map you asked to load. If you decline them the site still works, it simply forgets those choices between visits.

3. The cookies used on this site

The complete list as at the last check. Durations are those declared by each provider; some cookies are renewed on each visit.

Only the first of these is set before you choose, and it is set by us, not by anyone else. The other four appear once you accept.

4. How to change your preferences

The banner appears on your first visit. Your choice is remembered for six months, after which you are asked again. If we change what the banner says, we ask again straight away, because an answer given to one question does not cover a different one.

You can change your mind at any time: the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page reopens the same panel, with your current choice shown. Withdrawing is exactly as easy as giving, which is what the law requires.

You can also delete cookies at any time from your browser settings, and set your browser to refuse them altogether. If you do, parts of this site and of most other sites may stop working as intended.

5. What happens before you choose

Before you answer the banner, only the cookie that stores your choice is set. No analytics or advertising cookie is written to your browser.

We should be straightforward about one thing, though: Google’s measurement tags load with the page and send Google a signal that a visit happened, without writing cookies, before you have chosen. Your IP address reaches Google at that point. If you decline, no cookies are written and no further data is sent.

6. More information

How we handle personal data in general is set out in our Privacy Policy. The rules for using this site are in the Terms and Conditions.
