SEO UPDATES
WHAT CHANGED, AND WHETHER IT MATTERS TO YOU

Search platforms change constantly and explain themselves rarely. This section covers the changes that actually affect decisions, and — more importantly — the process we follow when a site moves, because reacting badly to an update does more damage than the update usually does.

/THE KINDS OF CHANGE
WORTH TRACKING

Not everything announced deserves your attention. These four categories do, in roughly this order of consequence.

01

Core ranking updates

Broad, periodic changes to how relevance and quality are assessed across the whole index. Nothing is “penalized”; the yardstick is re-cut, and sites move relative to each other. There is no specific fix, which is exactly why the response has to be structural rather than reactive.

02

Spam and policy updates

Targeted at specific manipulation patterns. Unlike core updates these do have a cause you can identify, and if you are affected you generally know why — or your previous agency does.

03

Changes to how results are presented

AI-generated answers, expanded result features, and shifts in what the page looks like above the traditional results. These can change click behavior substantially without changing your ranking at all, which makes rank tracking alone a misleading instrument.

04

Platform and measurement changes

Analytics, consent requirements, browser restrictions and advertising platform mechanics. Not ranking changes, but they alter what you can see, and a change in visibility gets mistaken for a change in performance more often than anything else on this list.

/WHERE WE
WATCH

Primary sources first. Secondary commentary is useful for spotting that something is happening, and unreliable for what it is.

  • Official channels — the Google Search Status Dashboard for confirmed ranking and crawling incidents, Search Central documentation and announcements, and the equivalent Bing channels.
  • Our own accounts — the most useful early signal we have. Movement across a portfolio of sites in different verticals separates a real index-wide event from one client’s own problem within hours.
  • Independent volatility trackers — useful for confirming that something happened and for nothing else. They cannot tell you what changed or why.
  • Vendor commentary — read for the questions it raises. Much of it is published within hours of an announcement, which is well before anybody has enough data to draw a conclusion.

/WHAT WE DO
WHEN A SITE MOVES

In this order, and the first two are the ones people skip.

01

Confirm the movement is real

Segment before diagnosing. A site-wide average can fall while every page that matters is flat, if one high-impression template moved. Split by page type, query intent, device and market before forming any theory at all.

02

Rule out your own side

A release, a robots change, a template edit, a CDN configuration, an expired certificate, a plugin update. In our experience a large share of “algorithm update” reports turn out to have a deployment date attached to them.

03

Rule out seasonality and the market

Compare against the same period last year and against competitors in the same result set. Demand falling is not the same as visibility falling, and only one of them is your problem to solve.

04

Wait out the volatility

Broad updates take time to settle, and positions oscillate while they do. Changing the site in the middle of that removes your ability to attribute anything afterward. This is the hardest advice to follow and the most valuable.

05

Then act on what the update actually targets

Once it has settled and the segmentation is clear, the work is usually the ordinary work: the pages that lost ground are competing against better answers, and the fix is to be a better answer. There is rarely a trick.

/WHAT WE
WILL NOT DO

We do not run emergency content rewrites in the first week of a broad update. The signal is too noisy to learn from and the change destroys the baseline you would need in order to learn anything later.

We do not sell recovery packages built on speculation about an update’s contents. Where the honest answer is that nobody outside the platform knows what changed, that is what you will be told.

We do not treat rank tracking as the primary instrument. When the way results are presented changes, position can hold while clicks fall — and the reverse. Impressions, clicks and downstream conversions, segmented properly, are what we act on.

SOMETHING MOVED
AND YOU DO NOT KNOW WHY?

That is a diagnosis, not a subscription. Send us the domain and roughly when the change started, and you will get an assessment of whether this looks like an update, a technical regression on your side, or the market doing what it does every year at this time.

  • Technical SEO — if the cause turns out to be on your side
