WORKING SESSIONS, NOT SALES PITCHES
There is nothing scheduled on this page yet. When there is, it will appear here with the date, the person running it and what you should know beforehand. This page explains the formats a session can take, what each one is actually for, and how to ask for one for your own team.
/THE FORMATS
A SESSION CAN TAKE
Four shapes, each chosen to answer a different kind of question. None of them is a slide deck with a pricing page at the end.
Technical walkthrough
One narrow subject, screen shared, done live rather than described. Setting up server-side tracking, diagnosing an indexing problem, reading a crawl report. Aimed at people who will have to implement something on Monday.
Live audit
A volunteered site or ad account examined in front of the audience, with the reasoning spoken out loud — including the wrong turns. The most useful of the four, and the most uncomfortable, which is roughly the same reason.
Question clinic
No presentation. Questions submitted in advance, answered in order, with the unanswerable ones identified as such. Works best when the audience is mixed in seniority.
Private team session
The same material run for one company’s team, using that company’s own site and accounts as the worked example. Arranged directly rather than scheduled publicly.
Arrange one/WHAT A SESSION
INCLUDES
What you should expect if you attend one, and what you should hold us to if you do.
- A named subject narrow enough to cover properly in the time, rather than an overview of a discipline.
- Real screens and real data — anonymized where it belongs to a client, and never used without that client’s permission.
- Live questions, answered during the session rather than collected for a follow-up email.
- The material afterward, without a form in front of it.
- An explicit statement of what we do not know about the subject, which on most current search topics is a meaningful part of it.
/WHY THIS PAGE
IS NOT A CALENDAR
Because listing sessions that are not confirmed would be a way of making an empty page look busy, and you would find out at the registration form. We would rather the page say plainly that nothing is scheduled.
A session gets scheduled only when there is something worth running one about — a platform change with real consequences, a recurring question we are answering individually too many times, or a client team that needs a subject covered properly. Any of those makes for a better session than a fixed monthly slot would.
If you want to know when one is scheduled, or you want a specific subject covered, the fastest route is to say so. Requests genuinely determine what gets run.
WANT A SESSION
FOR YOUR TEAM?
Tell us the subject, roughly how many people, and how technical they are. A private session would be arranged directly and built around your own site or account, which makes it considerably more useful than a public one — and if it is a subject worth a wider audience, we will ask whether you mind us running it publicly too.
- SEO Guides — the written version of most of this material
- PPC Guides — the paid media equivalent
- Contact — request a session, or ask to be told when one is scheduled
