Law Firm Marketing Insights

Practical notes on measuring marketing for law firms, where most new clients call first, every inquiry is confidential and one retained case can be worth more than a month of leads.

Legal clients search in moments of urgency or stress. The firms that show up with clarity, authority, and proof of expertise win the consultations.

/01

THE SITUATION

Law firms receive inquiries by phone, email, contact forms and referrals, and only some of them become retained matters. Practice areas differ a lot in value: an employment dispute and a commercial contract bring very different fees. Marketing reports that count contact forms miss most of this.

/02

WHY IT MATTERS

When every inquiry counts the same, campaigns drift toward the practice areas with the cheapest leads, not the most valuable ones. Intake teams spend time on people the firm cannot help, and partners lose confidence in the numbers marketing brings to the meeting.

/03

HOW WE APPROACH IT

We track inquiries by practice area and channel, add call tracking where calls matter, and agree with the intake team on a short status for each inquiry: qualified, consultation booked, retained. Confidential details stay out of marketing tools; only the status and the source are recorded.

/NOTES FROM THE WORK

What we often find when we audit law firm marketing data.

  • Calls, the main source of new matters, untracked or tracked without the source
  • Inquiries for practice areas the firm does not handle counted as leads
  • No link between the first contact and the retained matter in the case management system
  • Referrals and directory listings left out of the source reports

/WHAT THE WORK COVERS

Calls, forms and emails tracked by practice area and source.

Inquiry status

A simple status set by your intake team, with no confidential details.

Practice area reporting

Cost per qualified inquiry and per retained matter for each practice area.

Tracking setup

GA4, Google Tag Manager, consent mode, and server-side tagging where the ad spend justifies it.

Dashboards

Looker Studio reports built around the decisions you make each month, not around every available metric.

/WHAT WE MEASURE

  1. /01

    Qualified inquiries

Inquiries the firm can take on, by practice area.

  2. /02

    Consultation rate

How many qualified inquiries book a first consultation.

  3. /03

    Retained matters

Matters opened from marketing sources, where your system records them.

  4. /04

    Source mix

Search, ads, directories and referrals compared on the same terms.

/HOW LONG IT TAKES

/01

Tracking audit

We list every tag, event and conversion, and check each one against what really happened on the site.

/02

Rebuild and validate

Broken or missing tracking is rebuilt and tested against orders, calls or CRM records.

/03

Reporting and review

A monthly review of the numbers that matter, with the decisions they support written down.
